Rhinau Island National Nature Reserve
Between the Old Rhine and the canalized Rhine, Rhinau Island stretches 10 km long and up to 400 meters wide, forming a true little Alsatian Rhine jungle. Covering nearly 450 hectares, including 311 classified as a Nature Reserve, this preserved site invites walking, cycling, or even flat-bottom boat rides. This unique mosaic of floodplain forests, wet meadows, reed beds, ponds, and waterways shelters exceptional biodiversity: dragonflies, amphibians, rare fish, and many birds find refuge here. In winter, the island becomes a sanctuary for migratory birds' wintering, linked to the neighboring Taubergiessen reserve in Germany.
However, this lush nature remains fragile, subject to the seasonal floods of the Rhine that shape its landscape over time.
To better understand these ecosystems, the Alsatian Sites Conservatory organizes guided tours.
