Rhine Island
The Rhine Islands, nestled between the Grand Canal of Alsace and the river, form a remarkable ecosystem. Each winter, they host over 60,000 water birds, such as mallards, teal, tufted ducks, and egrets.
These natural areas benefit from developments aimed at reducing industrial and urban pollution while restoring the ecological continuity of the Rhine. The creation of fish passes notably supports the return of the Atlantic salmon, a symbol of the revival of this once degraded aquatic environment.
The site lends itself to a wide variety of activities. Walking and cycling enthusiasts can explore the shores and islands along well-maintained routes. The waters of the Rhine also offer nautical leisure activities: fishing, sailing, rowing, or cruises allow visitors to discover the river from different perspectives. Finally, a stroll by the water may offer an unusual encounter with one of the last professional fishermen on the Rhine, still active and faithful to an ancestral tradition.
