Ringelberg-Stein Gallo-Roman Fortifications

Perched at 611 meters above sea level, this oval complex about sixty meters along its major axis is built of dry stone. Long considered a Gallo-Roman relic, it actually probably dates back to the early Middle Ages. This site could represent the original location of the nearby castle, the Grand Ringelstein. The surrounding ditches contain traces of a bossage quarry dating from the early 13th century. The stones extracted here were notably used to build the Grand Ringelstein castle.
