Robertsau and La Wantzenau Forest Nature Reserve

A few kilometers north of Strasbourg lies the Robertsau and La Wantzenau Forest National Nature Reserve, an exceptional ecological area covering 710 hectares.

Partially classified since 2020, this alluvial forest, a remnant of the former Rhine environments, owes its biological richness to the influence of past Rhine floods.

Although the river has been dammed and canalized, its impact persists through groundwater rises, shaping a mosaic of varied habitats: dense forests, marshy areas, open spaces, and aquatic expanses. This abundance of ecosystems hosts remarkable flora and fauna, including many threatened species in Alsace such as the European beaver, crested newt, European eel, marsh harrier, and teal.

Accessible from the Piste des Forts, the reserve is ideal for both walking and cycling, offering a peaceful haven and an endless source of discovery in every season, just minutes from Strasbourg.
