Rock Houses

Graufthal, an Alsatian village surrounded by forests and crowned by imposing pink sandstone cliffs, is renowned for its troglodyte dwellings.

These houses, unique in Alsace, are built into the rock, which serves as their floor, walls, and ceiling.

Only the front facades, painted blue, were constructed by humans.

Their picturesque charm attracts walkers, offering a true journey back in time.

These homes were inhabited until 1958, and their living conditions still surprise visitors today.

Nearby, the remains of the former Saint-Gangolphe Abbey and the exhibition "An Abbey Resurfaces from the Past," housed in the Rock Houses, complete the visit.
