Roesselmann Fountain
Erected in 1888 by Auguste Bartholdi, this statue pays tribute to Jean Roesselmann, the provost of Colmar who died in 1262.
He perished defending Colmar and its communal freedoms against the troops and ambitions of the Bishop of Strasbourg.
The statue's features are inspired by Hercule de Peyerimhoff, mayor of Colmar from 1855 to 1877, who was removed from office for refusing to yield to German authorities.
Taken by the Germans in 1943, the bronze statue was restored and reinstalled in 1945 on a white stone monument. This base is decorated with four fish that serve as water spouts.
