Rothau

Rothau was the administrative center of the Ban-de-la-Roche until the French Revolution, following the destruction of the Château de la Roche around 1470. The town then belonged to Jean de Dietrich, the last lord of the area. Before the 19th century, its prosperity was based on mining. Around 1830, the textile industry took over and left a lasting mark on its economy. The painter Gustave Brion, born in Rothau in 1824, contributed to its fame, notably illustrating works by Victor Hugo.

Today, only one textile company continues this historic expertise: Tissus DOT, specializing in weaving and dyeing.

Among the must-see sites are the Dietrich family castle and the Protestant church, inspired by Piedmontese Renaissance architecture.
