Rothmoos Regional Nature Reserve

The Rothmoos originated from mining subsidence that created a marshy area. These marshes, once overrun by mosquitoes from brackish environments, made life unpleasant for nearby mining towns.

In 1987, it was decided to maintain the site with a constant water depth of 70 centimeters to make it more welcoming and functional.

The rehabilitation of this area by the former potash mines and the Alsace Sites Conservatory aimed primarily to protect the birds living there. Thanks to its difficult access, Rothmoos hosts a wide variety of birds: migratory visitors, wintering birds, and resident breeders.

These wetlands, rare in Alsace, also serve as a key breeding site for amphibians, enhancing its ecological importance.
