Rouffach
Rouffach, former capital of Haut Mundat, embodies an Alsace where history and landscapes blend harmoniously. Nestled at the border between the Rhine plain and the vineyard slopes, this town has always been a favored place to live since Antiquity. Romans, Merovingians, Teutonic knights, prince-bishops of Strasbourg, and Renaissance figures shaped its destiny, leaving behind an exceptional heritage now actively promoted by the city.
The Notre-Dame de l’Assumption church, heir to the architecture of Strasbourg Cathedral, stands as a gem of Romanesque-Gothic art in the heart of a square of rare beauty in Alsace. Nearby, the former convent church of the Récollets was, during the humanist era, a major center of learning, training renowned theologians and scholars.
Isenbourg castle, built by the Merovingians and former residence of Dagobert II, now overlooks the town from the hills. Transformed into a 5-star hotel-restaurant, it symbolizes Rouffach’s heritage identity. The Renaissance houses with their characteristic stepped gables, along with the witches’ tower, complete the town’s romantic and enchanting atmosphere.
With its microclimate, rich historical and natural heritage, gourmet restaurants, and grand crus, Rouffach offers a unique experience. Events like the Musicalta festival, the witches’ festival, and Rouffach en fête make it a sought-after destination for those seeking authenticity and quality of life in a dynamic yet preserved Alsace.
