Russ
In the 14th century, the village of Russ, then called Ober-Russ or Nieder-Russ depending on the altitude, already had a distinct community life between its upper and lower parts. Largely destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, it recovered thanks to its agricultural activities, forest exploitation, and charcoal production, essential for the local steel industry. The commune then had a quarry, a sawmill, and craft workshops making clogs and various everyday objects. Until 1761, the parish of Russ depended on that of Barembach before gaining religious autonomy. Today, the village thrives around several dynamic businesses, including Super U, Josy Tourisme, and SATD, while preserving its natural heritage. A must-see during a visit is the Simon Arboretum, which offers a peaceful and educational setting to discover the region's plant diversity.
