Ryumon Ji Monastery

Perched on the edge of a vast forest spanning several thousand hectares, just outside the Alsatian village of Weiterswiller, about fifty kilometers north of Strasbourg, the Ryumon Ji monastery centers around a Buddhist chapel. Several buildings surround it, housing a community dedicated to monastic life. The site is distinguished by its green spaces: a vegetable garden, a medicinal herb garden, and a rock garden, all contributing to the tranquil atmosphere.

Founded in 1999 by Master Reigen Wang-Genh, this monastery owes its existence to donations and support from practitioners in Alsace and southern Germany. Since then, monks, nuns, and laypeople live here according to the precepts of the Sōtō Zen school, under the guidance of Master Wang-Genh, himself a disciple of Master Taisen Deshimaru since 1973.

Recognized by the highest authorities of Sōtō Zen, this community is an official place for teaching and practicing Zen Buddhism. Ryumon Ji welcomes visitors year-round who wish to immerse themselves in monastic life. It is possible to participate in retreats, short or long, structured around Zen meditation sessions (zazen), silent meals, and ceremonies. Themed retreats are also offered to deepen practice.
