Saint Brice Chapel

Nestled between Schwoben and Hausgauen in a peaceful green setting, the Saint Brice Chapel today bears the year 1695 on its facade. However, its origins may date back to the year 1000, making it the oldest sanctuary in the valley, alongside the church of Knoeringue. Behind it, on the hillside, once lay the village of Dennach, likely abandoned in the 15th century. In 1753, a hermitage was added extending from the choir. The hermits, tasked with maintaining and beautifying the chapel, lived modestly on donations from the faithful and municipal subsidies. The last hermit disappeared in 1879, and legend says the chapel bell then rang by itself, as if marking his departure. Popular belief also speaks of a demonic dog with bulging eyes near the chapel at midnight, while the ghosts of the soldiers responsible for Dennach's destruction haunt the area. As soon as the first hour of the morning strikes in the nearby village, all these spirits vanish, allowing the chapel to regain its serenity.
