Saint George Church

This sanctuary, built between the 12th and 13th centuries, elegantly combines Romanesque and Gothic styles. Its nave, dating from the 12th century, and its Gothic choir, constructed in 1283, reflect architectural evolutions and shifts in city power: the nave was commissioned by the nobility, while the choir was later initiated by the bourgeoisie. The church was consecrated in 1283 by the Bishop of Basel and enriched in the 15th century with two chapels in the flamboyant style. Among its treasures are an 11-meter-high eucharistic tower from 1523, a Christ on the cross created by Clément de Bade in 1488, and a 19th-century altarpiece incorporating elements from an older altarpiece of 1496. Destroyed in 1945 by bombings, the church was rebuilt between 1956 and 1963, notably featuring contemporary stained glass windows by Jacques Le Chevalier and a red sandstone main altar by Louis Rudloff.
