Saint George Church
The first mention of a church in Marckolsheim dates back to 1215, and it has been under the patronage of Saint George since 1445. In 1837, a new church was built, but it was severely damaged by bombings in 1940 and then destroyed by the Nazis the following year. Construction of the current church began in 1961 under architects Albert Horn and Auguste Sigrist. It was solemnly consecrated on June 7, 1965. Above its entrance stands the statue of Saint George, the only remnant of the old church. Inside, the building preserves remarkable historical elements, such as sandstone baptismal fonts dating from the 12th century and a painting depicting the suffering Christ, created in the 16th century.
