Saint Laurent Chapel of Gougenheim
The current Saint-Laurent Chapel, erected in 1524, underwent two major restorations in 1836 and 1876. During these works, its entrance door, originally located on the south side, was moved to the west. An intriguing discovery was made at that time: a well-preserved skeleton, suggesting the possible existence of a nearby cemetery. Inside, foundations, possibly those of an earlier chapel dating back to 1136, were uncovered about two-thirds along the length of the building, indicating a later expansion. The current bell was acquired in 1859.
In the past, the chapel attracted many pilgrims invoking Saint Laurent to obtain healing for skin diseases such as abscesses or eczema. These faithful cleaned the building with a broom, which they then hung on the wall as an offering, hoping to receive their cure.
The chapel remains closed to the public from November to Easter.
