Saint-Maurice Church

The Saint-Maurice Church in Guewenheim, built in 1760, embodies a rich historical heritage. Its walls, marked by the two world wars, suffered severe damage before a complete restoration, carried out between 1958 and 1965, restored its original splendor while preserving its period architecture.

Inside, two wooden and stucco altars, painted in 1833 by Antoine Feuerstein, draw attention: one dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary, the other to Saint Anthony of Padua. The tomb of the main altar, executed in an elegant neoclassical style, also bears Feuerstein's signature. The main altarpiece, a striking work by Heinrich Kaiser, depicts Saint Maurice receiving the crown of martyrs from Christ.

The baptismal font, from the old church, establishes a tangible link with the village's religious past. The organ, built in 1833 by Joseph Stiehr, has endured through the ages thanks to several successive restorations by Rinckenbach, Thomann, and then Louis-François Callinet, thus perpetuating a musical tradition at the heart of the liturgy.
