Saint Nicholas Chapel

Perched in Ottrott-le-Bas, this medieval chapel was built in the 12th century by the parents of Gertrude de Rathsamhausen. First mentioned in 1227 when it was donated to the Niedermunster Abbey, it has endured through the centuries, facing challenges such as partial destruction in 1622 during the Thirty Years' War, followed by reconstruction the following year.

Its bell tower, likely built at the end of the 18th or beginning of the 19th century, is notable for its lightweight half-timbered structure designed to reduce weight. Despite being later, it perfectly harmonizes with the overall architecture in both proportions and shape.

Inside, a gallery accessible by an external wooden staircase, protected by a canopy visible in an 1836 engraving, may date from the early 19th century. The chapel also houses two remarkable statues: a Virgin and Child from the early 14th century, considered one of the oldest Madonnas in Alsace, and an 18th-century Saint Nicholas.
