Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines
Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, whose territory was divided in the Middle Ages between Lorraine and Alsace, built its prosperity on mining. In the 16th century, silver extraction reached its peak, leaving a lasting mark on local history. Later, in the 19th century, the textile industry took over, specializing notably in fabrics made from blended fibers and wool. The town also hosted several religious communities over the centuries. Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines is especially known as the birthplace of the Amish movement, founded here in 1693, and is home to one of the oldest Reformed churches in France.
