Schaefertal Chapel

In the heart of a clearing conducive to reflection, the Schaefertal Chapel, nicknamed "Val du Pâtre," has attracted villagers and valley nobles for centuries. Tradition holds it was built where the Virgin Mary saved a shepherd during a drought threatening his flock. A miraculous spring still flows before its porch, and since 1272, the waters of Soultzmatt, including the famous Lisbeth, have been known for their healing properties and bottled locally.

Inside, the chapel houses a Renaissance statue of the Virgin and Child, a painting depicting the miraculous event, and a charter commemorating its reconsecration by the Bishop of Basel in 1511. Outside, a Stations of the Cross, erected in 1778 by devoted winegrowers, follows the route of the Way of St. James. This path leads to the Romanian military cemetery and the Langenstein, also called "Long Stone," where a legend tells of white-clad women dancing on full moon nights. Further on, the Grosser Fels, or "Great Rock," offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding vineyards.
