Schirmeck

Founded in the 13th century by the Bishop of Strasbourg to control a strategic crossroads, this former fortified town developed around agriculture, forestry, then iron mining and quarries. In the 19th century, its economy diversified with the establishment of industries, notably a tannery that became textile, before experiencing a gradual decline from 1950. Despite industrial fluctuations, the town remains a dynamic center today, serving as the administrative center of a canton in Alsace.

Among its main attractions is the Alsace-Moselle Memorial, which traces the region's history from 1870 to the present day through recently accessible archives and innovative audiovisual tools. Visitors can discover an interactive and educational approach to this complex period. Nearby, the Castle Museum and its shaded trail, as well as the architectural heritage of Avenue de la Gare and the sanatorium, complete the town's cultural and historical offerings.
