Schirmeck Castle

Built in the early 13th century, this castle played a significant role in the region's history before being devastated by the Swedes in 1633 during the Thirty Years' War. A century later, in 1705, the French considered rebuilding it, but the project was abandoned. In 1778, stones from the castle were repurposed to build the bell tower of the nearby church. The local population followed suit, extensively using the materials to construct their own homes. Today, only a portion of the castle has been restored, notably in 1969 by the City of Schirmeck. Despite its fragmented state, the site offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.
