Sickert

Sickert, whose name first appears in records in 1482, is an Alsatian village nestled in the Sickertbach valley. Its peaceful setting and serene atmosphere are celebrated in a local song: "In Sickert, we live happily like in paradise." In the 19th century, the village's economy was mainly based on weaving and agriculture, with Saint Severin, the patron saint of weavers, particularly revered. The inhabitants, nicknamed the "Kirschklepfer" (cherry pit spitters) in Alsatian, continue this local tradition. Sickert is also the birthplace of two notable figures: Paul Schreiber (1903-1995), founder of the Petits Chanteurs de Hochstatt and Thann, and a Knight of the Legion of Honour, and Louis Zimmermann (1905-1997), founder of the newspaper L’Alsace and mayor of the commune from 1971 to 1983, also an officer of the Legion of Honour. Tourist attractions in Sickert include the Owl Chapel, locally called the Kutzakapalala, as well as the Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
