Simultaneous Church of Wangen

The church dates back to the 13th century, with its first construction erected in 1214 during the reign of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen. A sandstone tympanum depicting the Lamb of God, the oldest preserved relic, attests to this. A fragment of Gothic stained glass showing a Christ enthroned has been incorporated into the window of the current building's portal, rebuilt in 1831. An inscription in German, carved into the western wall of the nave, recalls an earlier expansion of the church in 1581 under Abbess Odile de Dürmentz. On April 5, 1686, the choir was made available to Catholics, marking the beginning of the Simultaneum, a religious coexistence still active today. After its demolition in 1830, the church was rebuilt and enlarged into its current form. Listed as a historic monument since 1999, it stands as a remarkable architectural and historical testimony.
