Site of the Former Schirmeck-Vorbrück Security Camp

Although the Schirmeck-Vorbrück internment camp was completely dismantled after the Liberation between 1954 and 1960, some remnants remain. Souvenir Street still houses the "Kommandantur" building, constructed in 1943. Now privately owned, a commemorative plaque on its facade recalls the dark history written there. In 2019, a memorial stele was installed at the site of the former security camp, marking an essential place of remembrance.

Unique within the Nazi concentration camp system, this camp's purpose was to re-educate dissenters through terror, repression, and sometimes disappearance. To deepen understanding of this period, visitors can see the gate of the former town hall, now the Schirmeck media library, as well as the original entrance gate of the camp. A Memory and History trail also allows exploration of these historically significant sites.
