Square Tower

In the Middle Ages, Wasselonne was protected by a castle of which only a few remarkable elements remain today. The entrance gate, flanked by two round turrets, still overlooks the town. Raised by a square tower in 1789, it replaced an old watchtower destroyed in 1674. The lower part once housed the guardian's quarters as well as cells for prisoners.

This fortified gate, designed for defense, features arrow slits and machicolations. Above the vault, an arrow slit is closed by a rotating cylindrical stone. Below, an empty space bears witness to the lord's coat of arms, defaced during the Revolution. Inside the square tower is a clock mechanism dating from 1881, as well as a large bell installed in 1818.

The tower is only accessible from the outside, except during guided tours organized by the Mossig and Vineyard Intercommunal Tourist Office, or in the summer season.
