Steinbach
Steinbach, whose name means "stream of stones," stretches at the foot of the Alsace plain before rising into the green valley of Silberthal.
This village, first mentioned in 1187 under the name *cellarium de Steinbach*, became an independent parish in 1583.
Long associated with Cernay, the canton capital, Steinbach formed a single municipality with it until 1847.
The village, known for its vineyards and mines extracting iron, silver, lead, and copper, has had a turbulent history.
Destroyed in the early months of World War I, it was rebuilt before being severely damaged again during its liberation in 1945.
