Steinsau Dam

This dam, built at the end of the 19th century, underwent significant renovation between autumn 2016 and 2017. The work, part of the overall management plan for the Ill River from 2014 to 2024, was carried out in two phases. The first phase created a canoe ramp and a fish pass. The second phase involved rebuilding the central piers and the dam bridge, automating the gates, and renovating the boat lift, also known as the mini-lock. These improvements restored the dam's navigational crossing. Additionally, six Archimedes screws, or slow-rotating turbines, were installed to generate hydroelectric power. This dam plays a key role in protecting the town of Erstein and the Strasbourg Eurometropolis area from Ill River floods. It also helps regulate the downstream flow from the sugar-producing city, ensuring the continuation of tourist navigation in the heart of Strasbourg.
