Stolpersteine Circuit

The Stolpersteine, literally "stumbling stones," are small concrete blocks topped with a brass plate engraved with details.

Each cube, embedded in the ground in front of the last residence of a victim, bears the inscription "Here lived" followed by the name, birth date, fate, place of deportation, and date of death of the person commemorated.

This artistic project, created by German artist Gunter Demnig, pays tribute to those persecuted, deported, or murdered by the Nazi regime in camps, killing centers, or other tragic circumstances.

Since 1993, thousands of these stones have been installed, initially in Germany and then across many European countries.

In Obernai, 13 Stolpersteine were placed on June 13, 2022, followed by 8 more on April 12, 2024.
