Stolpersteine® Jules Jonas Meyer

The Stolpersteine are an artistic memorial project initiated by German artist Gunter Demnig, born in Berlin. Since 1992, he has been installing memory cobblestones in front of the former homes of victims of Nazism. Each cobblestone bears a brass plaque engraved with a message recalling the name and fate of a deported and exterminated person: Jews, nomads (Manouches, Roma, Yenish…), political deportees, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, disabled people, or other victims of the Nazi regime.

The cobblestone dedicated to Jules Jonas Meyer was placed in front of the address where he was born in 1882. In 1940, his business was confiscated by the Nazis, forcing him to take refuge in Paris. Arrested during the Vel' d'Hiv roundup in July 1942, he was deported to Auschwitz, where he died three months later.
