Strangenberg Hill
The Strangenberg is part of the Guebwiller fault zone, where geological compartments form limestone or sandstone hills.
Its location strongly influences its climate: moist westerly winds drop their moisture on the High Vosges, leaving Westhalten, just 25 km away, with a semi-continental climate featuring stormy summers.
Westhalten receives an average of 500 mm of rain annually, four times less than the Vosges peaks, where precipitation peaks in winter.
These sometimes devastating storms temporarily ease the dryness of the hill's limestone soils.
These unique geological and climatic conditions shape a richly diverse flora.
The wetter northern slopes host dense, varied hedgerows, while the western and eastern slopes feature a dry steppe landscape where vegetation takes refuge among scree.
The sun-exposed southern slopes are covered with sparse vegetation adapted to intense dryness.
Finally, the limestone summits around Westhalten are dotted with steppe heaths with short grass.
