Strasbourg Gate

Built in 1679, this imposing fortified gate combines pink sandstone, bricks, and ashlar stones. It is the only remaining vestige of the fortifications designed by Vauban and constructed under the direction of Tarade. Louvois, minister to Louis XIV, personally laid the first stone, sealing a lead box containing the minutes of the ceremony, coins, and medals.

The former passage has since been bricked up. A marble plaque commemorating the siege of the city in 1814 under the command of Commander Schweisguth was affixed on June 10, 1919.
