Sundials - Former Charterhouse

On the façade of the local hospital in Molsheim stands a large sundial made in 1703 by Father Constantius, a Capuchin monk. Covering an area of about four square meters, its dial features declination lines alternating between light and dark strokes. Several restorations have been carried out over time to correct its details.

In the cloister's inner courtyard, a second sundial, carved from a block of sandstone, is mounted on a column. Dated 1666, it complements this astronomical heritage.

These instruments recall the central role of time in the lives of the Carthusian monks, essential for organizing their sustenance and successfully carrying out their mission of hospitality.
