Surbourg

Surbourg, the third stop on the Alsace Romanesque Route, stands out for its medieval heritage. The former collegiate church of Saint-Arbogast, built mainly in the 11th century, embodies early Alsatian Romanesque art and rests on the foundations of the region's oldest abbey. This monument thus bears witness to the local religious and architectural history from that distant era.

The village also hosted a Jewish community from 1550, now extinct. Although the synagogue has disappeared, a remnant of this presence remains: an 18th-century house at 4 rue du Général-Leclerc, where Hebrew inscriptions are still visible. This detail recalls Surbourg's multicultural past.

Surbourg is easily accessible by train via the Strasbourg – Haguenau – Wissembourg line, with a stop at Hoelschloch-Surbourg station.
