The Altarpiece of Buhl
The centerpiece of the furnishings of the Saint John the Baptist parish church in Buhl, this altarpiece is a pictorial masterpiece from the late 15th century. Attributed to the school of Martin Schongauer, it embodies all the characteristic techniques of early Renaissance works: preliminary perspectives, engraved gold, shimmering colors, deep drapery, and applied brocades. Typically Rhineland in style, its dimensions are impressive: 1.97 meters high and 3.50 meters long for the central panel, with a total wingspan reaching 7 meters when fully opened.
