The Beinheim Bridge Structure

Inaugurated in 1895, the Rhine Bridge is an iconic structure connecting the French commune of Beinheim to the German locality of Wintersdorf.

Stretching 600 meters, including about 250 meters over the Rhine, this bridge has symbolized the link between France and Germany for over a century.

Originally designed by the German Reich for strategic reasons, it was heavily used by the military during World War I.

After Alsace and Moselle were returned to France, the bridge became French property.

During World War II, it was destroyed twice before being rebuilt between 1947 and 1949 by the SNCF.

This new structure included both a railway track and a road.

Until 1960, its use was exclusively reserved for the French army. Only after lengthy negotiations was the bridge finally opened to passenger traffic.
