The Boatmen's Mast
Since the Rhine became a navigable waterway, the villages along its banks have always had many boatmen among their inhabitants. These professionals, with various roles ranging from cabin boy to captain, including cook and mechanic, significantly contributed to the local economy and shaped the history of these riverside communities.
A tangible tribute to this importance stands in the Place de la Wacht: an imposing monument erected in 1957 by about 150 local boatmen. They had formed an association to honor their economic and social role. This symbolic site thus commemorates the maritime heritage of the region.
On holidays and festive days, the monument is adorned with numerous colorful pennants and banners, adding a festive touch to this historically rich place.
