The Castle of the Counts of Eguisheim

Around the year 720, Count Eberhard, brother of Duke Liutfrid and grandson of the Duke of Alsace Adalric-Etichon, is said to have built or restored the Eguisheim fortress. Later, Egeno, a relative of Eberhard, restored it and gave his name to the village that developed around this stronghold. The comital family occupied the castle until 1225, the year the lineage ended definitively.

The ground floor rooms, dating from the 10th century, served as the residence of Count Hugo IV of Eguisheim and his wife, Countess Heilwige of Dabo. The latter was related to Count Bruno, born in 1002, who became bishop of Toul and later pope under the name Leo IX.

Today, the Eguisheim castle belongs to the municipality. It is only open to the public during exhibitions, certain events, or receptions held on site.
