The Cathedral
A marvel combining grandeur and delicacy, Strasbourg Cathedral, built between 1015 and 1439, represents a pinnacle of Gothic art. Its spire, rising to 142 meters, offers remarkable lightness and made this building the tallest in Christendom until the 19th century. The visit is structured around three highlights: outside, the facade reveals itself as the largest picture book of the Middle Ages, where hundreds of sculptures seem to animate the stone, playing with shadows and light. The pink sandstone changes hue depending on the time and weather, and on summer evenings, a light show transforms the cathedral into a captivating spectacle. Inside, the soaring nave invites contemplation. The stained glass windows, dating from the 12th to 14th centuries, and the rose window captivate with their beauty. The monumental organ, with its case adorned with automatons, and the Renaissance astronomical clock, whose mechanism dates from 1842, are jewels in their own right. Every day at 12:30 PM, the procession of the Apostles comes to life. Access is partially adapted for people with reduced mobility on the north side. Visitors are also asked to wear covering clothing.
