The Church and Its Murals
On the ground floor of the Romanesque bell tower with paired windows of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church in Fouday is the choir of the medieval building. Recently restored murals decorate the walls, including a crowning of the Virgin accompanied by several figures of saints. In 1777, Pastor Oberlin altered the space by replacing the old nave with a room adapted for Protestant worship, featuring benches and galleries arranged on three sides around the central pulpit.
The church is especially famous for its connection to Pastor Jean Frédéric Oberlin, whose remains rest in the adjoining cemetery. His grave, topped with an iron cross, bears the inscription "Papa Oberlin," reflecting the parishioners' gratitude for his social, educational, and spiritual commitment. The ensemble formed by the church and its cemetery is classified as a historic monument.
