The Col de la Schlucht - Munster Valley
Perched at 1,139 meters above sea level, the Col de la Schlucht is located on the Route des Crêtes, a scenic route crossing the Vosges Mountains. From this vantage point, you can take in views of the surrounding peaks and the region's main lakes, offering a stunning natural spectacle. The site is ideal for many activities: hiking, snowshoeing in winter, and skiing in the nearby Munster Valley. Visitors can also stop at one of the local farm inns to enjoy a typical meal, often inspired by local cheese-making traditions, the famous "repas marcaires."
The col's history is marked by its strategic role. The Route des Crêtes, built in 1915 by French troops, makes it a place rich in memory. Two railway lines also left their mark: the first, opened in 1903, connected Gérardmer to Hohneck via the Schlucht, while the second, operating from 1907 to 1914, served Munster before reaching the col.
