The Covered Bridges

At the edge of the picturesque Petite France district, the Covered Bridges of Strasbourg stretch out with a history dating back to the Middle Ages. Although their wooden roofs disappeared in the 18th century, they still bear their evocative name. These structures are flanked by three imposing towers, built in the 13th century. These towers were part of the city walls, symbols of the independence of the Strasbourg republic. After Strasbourg was annexed by France in 1681, Vauban designed a new fortified enclosure to strengthen the city's defenses.
