The Donon State Forest

The Donon massif is home to an exceptional forest, recognized for its ecological richness.

The Donon-Schneeberg sites, mainly forested and located on ridges or slopes, are dedicated to the protection of remarkable animal and plant species. Protected birds include the capercaillie, wood grouse, woodpeckers, shrikes, and peregrine falcon. The massif also hosts mammals such as lynx, wildcat, and bats, as well as amphibians, reptiles, and insects. On the flora side, certain plants receive specific protection: taxicolous ferns, peat plants, species of rocks or scree.

Part of the massif is classified within the Natura 2000 network, a European program aimed at preserving natural habitats of major importance.
