The Dwarfs' Cave of Ferrette
The Dwarfs' Cave is primarily a legendary site where climbing can be practiced. Its rocks form an impressive 25-meter-high gorge, called Erdwibalaschlucht, shaped by erosion in karst limestone. According to legend, this gorge was home to the Erdmanala and the little earth women, the Erdwibala, who gave it its name. The cave, located at the bottom of the gorge, appears as a crack in the rock face, extended by two tunnels about fifteen meters long.
Above the gorge, the Dwarfs' Plateau offers a remarkable viewpoint over the Ill valley and the villages of Bouxwiller and Werentzhouse. This site is also known as Erdwibalafelsen, or Fairy Rock.
Two access routes lead to the cave. The first starts from the Community of Communes parking lot in Ferrette, located at 3A route de Lucelle. Follow the red diamond trail towards Sondersdorf for a walk of about 30 to 35 minutes (1.8 km). The second access is from the Keucht parking lot in the forest. Head towards Sondersdorf, then take a left onto a forest path marked by a wooden sign "Sentier des Nains" (Dwarfs' Trail). After a few hundred meters, a second parking lot is accessible. From there, a 15 to 20-minute walk on a trail suitable for all-terrain strollers leads to the cave.
