The Four City Gates

The remains of the two medieval walls still testify today to the strategic and symbolic importance of this city.

The monumental gates, designed to protect the settlement while highlighting its status, are its most emblematic features. Among them, the Clock Tower, nicknamed Zittgloeckel, stands as an extension of the town hall.

Along with the School Tower, it was part of the first fortifications erected at the beginning of the 13th century. A second rampart, built between the 13th and 14th centuries, included eight towers and three gates. Of these gates, only the Lower Gate, located to the east, and the Lion Gate, to the north, still remain today.
