The Grand Cannon
This site marks the location of a Kaiser Wilhelm Geschütze type cannon, nicknamed "langer Max" or "Long Max," deployed during World War I. Its mission was to bombard Belfort to divert attention from the battles at Verdun and against the forts of Vaux and Douaumont. Today, beneath a forest cover and along the trails, many remnants remain visible or identifiable. Only the old barracks have disappeared, while the buried civil engineering works remain well preserved. A guided tour, led by passionate volunteers, allows visitors to explore the underground galleries and understand the organization of this military infrastructure. Independently, a marked trail with explanatory panels offers a discovery of the surface installations. To complete the experience, a dedicated app, "Site du Grand Canon de Zillisheim," provides a digital guide to explore this historic site.
