The Hohneck

Perched at 1,364 meters above sea level, the Hohneck is the second highest peak in the Vosges Mountains.

It rises majestically along the ridge line that separates Alsace from Lorraine, offering a strategic viewpoint over the surrounding landscapes.

The Schiessrothried Lake, located below, adds a touch of serenity to this preserved natural site.

This summit is a true paradise for hikers, thanks to its many marked trails winding through varied scenery.

It is framed by two glacial cirques, Frankenthal to the north and Wormspel to the south, where rare flora thrives on steep rocky slopes.

These unique conditions also make it a favored habitat for chamois, which find refuge and tranquility here.

From the Hohneck, the view embraces an exceptional panorama: the Alsatian valleys stretch out on the horizon, the High Vosges form the backdrop, and the Black Forest appears in the distance.

On clear days, it is even possible to glimpse the Alps, adding a spectacular dimension to this already grand landscape.

Nearby, the Petit Hohneck, located 1.5 km to the east and reaching 1,288 meters, offers gentler slopes.

In summer, these slopes host herds of Vosgian cows or some chamois, providing a pastoral scene typical of the region.
