The Kappelbronn Sequoia
This giant sequoia, planted in 1896, honors Louis Butze, a child who died of diphtheria at the age of four.
His father, a forest ranger, planted it near his son's house and playground. The tree was a gift from the child's uncle, a priest in Monaco, who brought two sequoias. The second, located near Louis's grave in the Lutzelhouse cemetery, disappeared in 1976, leaving only a stump visible today near the Scheidecker Chapel. To preserve this memory, the municipality and the National Forests Office planted two new sequoias in 1977-1978: one near the cemetery, the other at the forest entrance.
The latter, still standing, has a circumference of 7.07 meters at 1.50 meters above the ground.
