The Little Museum of the Former Lords

A descendant of the Gayling d’Altheim family, who emigrated during the Revolution of 1789, decided to rediscover the places his ancestors left two centuries earlier. In Buswiller, he found the remains of the family manor as well as remarkably preserved Baroque funerary monuments in the church choir. In Niedermodern, a fortified tower recalls their presence, while archives confirm their ties to Zutzendorf in the decades before the Revolution.

It was in this context that the idea arose to create a memorial dedicated to this influential family. The former school of Zutzendorf, now available, offered the opportunity to realize this project. Thus was born "The smallest museum in France," according to a French museum guide.

This museum mainly consists of a gallery of large-format reproductions, depicting the Gayling d’Altheim alongside related families Hanau-Lichtenberg and Fleckenstein. Visitors discover a little-known chapter of Northern Alsace’s history through the centuries.
