The Michelbach Dam and Nature Reserve

Built between 1979 and 1982, the Michelbach dam plays a crucial role in regulating the groundwater table and ensures the supply of drinking water to the Mulhouse urban area and surrounding municipalities.

This site, classified as a voluntary and approved nature reserve, enjoys special protection to preserve its biodiversity and fragile ecosystems.

Its management is jointly handled by the Mulhouse water service and the Michelbach dam mixed syndicate, who oversee the proper functioning of the infrastructure while protecting the environment.

A 4-kilometer walking trail, accessible in about an hour and a half, invites visitors to explore this preserved area. Equipped with educational panels, it allows observation and learning to identify many bird species, whether nesting or just passing through. Regular visitors include the cormorant, osprey, and crow. The route also offers breathtaking views of the Vosges peaks, notably Rossberg, Thannerhubel, Markstein, and Grand Ballon, adding a scenic dimension to this nature walk.
