The Nouveau Bassin
Dug in 1876 to meet the industrial boom of the region, the Nouveau Bassin was initially fed by the Ill River, which reappears here after an underground course through the city, as well as by the Rhône-Rhine Canal.
Around this basin, a significant industrial hub developed, marked by the arrival of the Laederich spinning mill in 1883 and the construction of the slaughterhouses, located where the Kinéopolis now stands.
Its economic role declined with the opening of the Ile Napoléon port, leading to its final abandonment in 1962.
Today, the Nouveau Bassin has been transformed into a refreshing green oasis in the heart of the city. It attracts many walkers and hosts contemporary artworks scattered along the paths designed for strolling.
